A few rough sketches and colour thumbs for a project that I created in school and am currently developing into a longer illustrated story:

A few months ago I was asked to do some colouring and illustration for an upcoming comic book project, 'BAD: Influence', by local writer Jordan C.
I worked with my awesome colleague Johnny Castuciano on the first image to create a few colour choices for the author, and then created another piece afterwards in a different style. This was a great project, and I look forward to seeing it developed further!

I love colouring, and when I get the chance, I love working with small, quick thumbnail versions so that I can try out different lighting and colour schemes. It's so easy to dramatically alter the mood of a simple line drawing, and working digitally makes the process fast! Below is a layout (based on the Captain's cabin in a tall ship that I used to be a tour guide on) for which I first created a line art version, then lighting variations, then quick colour ideas, before settling on the final version to paint fully.

I am currently working as a storyboard artist on a fantastic show, and was lucky enough recently to have my design chosen for the crew hoodie. There are so many talented people on my show, so it was an honour to have my art make it onto the finished product (and it's also super warm and comfortable!). Here's a bad-quality pic, with my very own ginger kitty Mort, who looks like he somewhat approves of the hoodie, sort of.

I felt like doing some silly fanart, so here are a couple of characters from the awesome 'Tales From the Borderlands' game  - just finished playing the final episode!

This is one of our cats, Ted. He hates love.

How It Happened in Hotterly Hollow

For the past few months I've been working on illustrations for a very cute new book from author Tracey Lynn Coutts, 'How It Happened in Hotterly Hollow'. The story is about two best friends who use very creative means to find another player for their small-town baseball team.

I've been lucky enough to work from rough illustrations by my very talented animation colleague Colleen Holub, and it's recently come together into a lovely little book that will be available online in a few weeks.

Also of note, 25% of the profits from the sale of 'How It Happened in Hotterly Hollow' will be donated to Breakfast For Learning (BFL). Operating nationally, BFL is Canada’s first and one of the largest charities focusing on nourishing children. See more about BFL at: http://www.breakfastforlearning.ca/

It's been a pleasure to work on, and I'll update when the book is available online - until then, here are a few snippets I've compiled from the finished illustrations!

A few bits and pieces, some little illustrations I did for gifts and invitations, and a couple of in-progress things (including some sketches trying to capture the personalities of my two naughty cats, Ted and Mort).

Throwback Thursday II

Here's another oooooooooold bit of art, so old that I did it before I ever used a cintiq or had any idea what I was doing. It's based on an old photo that my Grandad gave me from his collection of black and white photographs, although it's not anyone that we knew. I've always wanted to redo this one in a more stylised way, along with a series of other aviator-themed portraits - one day!

Throwback Thursday!

Here's some old art that's been lurking on my other blogs, from a few years ago. It's interesting to see how my style has changed since I did these -  much less 'muddy' colouring, a lot more lineless-style art, and, I hope, slightly better anatomy...I think if anything, my style has gotten a lot simpler. But, I definitely still draw characters in a similar way, and I definitely still veer towards the same kind of subject matter.

Two of the images are fan pieces from Sir Terry Pratchett's 'Discworld' series, one is a series of illustrations that I did for the Bucks Free Press republishing of one of Sir Terry's short stories, and the other is an original character from a short story I never finished.

Some quick fan art of characters from the Tales from the Borderlands video game! Trying a couple of different painting styles for the same composition, because I'm indecisive...

Changing up a couple of old gesture drawings with some colour! I find it fun (and challenging!) to rework 30-second gestures, and try to stylize and add anatomy to create a more finished drawing.
